The length of the border is 214 km. The access-restricted Border Security Zone of Russia lies along the border on the Russian side. In the 1990s - 2000s. on the basis of the Treaty of Riga in 1920 Latvia claimed the territory of Pskov Oblast (Latvian: Abrenes apriņķis).
